The Department of Health, Sport, and Exercise Sciences

Welcome to the Department of Health, Sport and Exercise Sciences at the University of Kansas.  Our department has a long and proud history, 108 years to be exact.  Since its beginnings under the leadership of James Naismith and Forrest (Phog) Allen, this department has evolved into the diverse and challenging program it is today.  It is a stimulating place to be if you are a student or a researcher, and many exciting things are going on which help to make the learning experiences here exceptional.  Additionally, our research programs and scholarly productivity are a continuously growing area of emphasis.  If you are a current or prospective undergraduate or graduate student, please check out our programs of study listed below.  We are more than happy to answer any questions you may have at the departmental numbers listed on this site.  If you are a member of the KU faculty, staff, or community, please check the numerous activity programs we offer in the Robinson Center.  We hope you find this web page helpful for whatever information you are seeking.  Whatever your needs, the HSES Department is one you want to check out.

Sincerely,

Andrew C. Fry, Ph.D., CSCS

Undergraduate students in the Department of Health, Sport, and Exercise Sciences (HSES) may enroll in professional teacher preparation programs in health and physical education. They may also enroll in non-licensure B.S.E. options in athletic training, sport science, and community health. Students in sport science select one of the three specializations- exercise science, pre-physical therapy, or sport management-that prepare them for work in health, fitness, or sport settings outside the schools. Students in community health prepare to work with public health agencies. Students in all non-licensure programs must complete an internship.

Graduate students in HSES may pursue a Master of Science in Education with a major in Physical Education with specializations offered in biomechanics, exercise science, health education, pedagogy, and sport studies. The Doctor of Philosophy degree is offered with emphases in exercise science, health education, pedagogy, and sports studies. The department is located at the Robinson Center which contains mediated classrooms, instructional research laboratories, gymnasiums, swimming pools, and racquetball courts. Playing fields and tennis courts are adjacent to Robinson Center.
