The School of Education is the proud home of 88 faculty members who excel in teaching, research and service.
School of Education faculty members are the recipients of numerous teaching awards, including the University of Kansas Chancellor’s Teaching Award, W.T. Kemper Fellowships for Teaching Excellence, H. Bernerd Fink Award for outstanding classroom teaching, H.O.P.E. Teaching Award, Ned Fleming Trust Teaching Award, the Higuchi/Endowment Research Achievement Award and Gene A. Budig awards.
Our faculty members consistently receive an average of 4.4 (on a scale of 1-5) in student evaluations of teaching effectiveness.

Research conducted by SOE faculty members impacts the lives of people every day. From developing methods to help adults with disability pursue self-determination to testing muscle strength in older adults with congestive heart failure, SOE faculty continue to advance knowledge in their fields and apply it to those who need it most.
SOE faculty members generated $24 million in outside grant funding in 2005.
Current grants include:
Nearly $4 million in funding for the next five years to the Beach Center to study the effects of disability policy on families.
Funding by the state to the Center for Educational Testing and Evaluation to provide all assessments for Kansas public schools to meet federal and state school testing mandates.
More than $9 million over the next six years was awarded to the Center for Research on Learning to help students in the Topeka Public Schools graduate from high school and prepare for further educational opportunities.
SOE faculty serve as advisors and consultants to a variety of public institutions. Faculty members are active in professional organizations, state, national and international initiatives and in other service organizations. Faculty members serve on state education standards committees, as liaisons to professional development schools, as members of the state Head Start Collaboration Council and in other vital roles. Faculty members affiliated with the Institute for Educational Research and Public Service worked with communities in 43 Kansas counties.
An integral component of the School of Education’s mission, staff members at the School of Education provide direct support to students through advising, placement and internships and student teaching positions, licensure and technology assistance, and scholarship and admission application assistance. Staff members also play a major role in the School’s grant funded initiatives.
