Special Education

Financial Support

This past year, faculty generated nearly $46.5 million in new and continuing grant funds to support research, model program development and professional preparation. On the student level, 235 Special Education graduate students received $1.8 million in federal grant funds in the form of tuition, stipends and professional travel money. The School of Education also issued $130,000 in achievement and donor-based scholarships to 80 students, while other top students received scholarships from various sources including the University, professional associations and private foundations. Our faculty and students represented in these numbers have worked hard to acquire necessary funding opportunities. With initiative and diligence, each student can obtain the funding needed to support their educational goals.

Options for funding graduate study are grants, fellowships, scholarships, awards, loans, and travel funds for presentations and research support. While we point out specific information on the following sites to assist students in their funding search, we advise students to visit these sites often to learn of new funding programs and opportunties. For exact enrollment costs, students should visit the Fees and Tuition link on the Office of the Registrar site.

Note: Loan Forgiveness Incentive for Special Education Teachers...Pass the Word! The nation's special education students are in dire need of qualified teachers. In 2005, the federal government created an incentive to retain special education teachers in low-income schools by increasing the amount of loan forgiveness to $17,500, available for special eduction teachers who teach for five consecutive years in designated schools.

You are eligible if:

  • You received federal Stafford or Perkins loans
  • You taught special education in a low-income school for five consecutive years
  • You borrowed money after 1998.

Many special educators, administrators, and university personnel are still unaware of this relatively new law. This loan forgiveness provision is also a great incentive for new students majoring in special education! Link to this informational flyer to find out more!

Department of Special Education

At the Department of Special Education, the following financial supports are available for a limited number of doctoral and masters/endorsement students:

  • Graduate research assistants on funded research grants,
  • Fellowship students on personnel training grants,
  • Recipients of Department or School of Education scholarships.

Faculty members who work directly with training grants select students who will aid in research and work closely with the specific faculty. Therefore, it is important that applicants indicate whether or not they are interested in support and make sure their application materials specify their relevant qualifications and experiences. To become familiar with research centers affiliated with the Department and current funded areas of research by faculty, students should browse the Affiliated Centers & Institutes and Sponsored Research pages of this site. Announcements of research positions and fellowships are also described on the School of Education Position Announcements.

School of Education

Scholarships offered by the Department of Special Education and the School of Education are posted online along with application forms on the School of Education's Scholarships page, located under the Current Students section. There are both donor-based scholarships (many of which are need-based) and achievement-based scholarships available. Please take note of the qualification requirements, deadlines and instructions when applying for these scholarships.

The University of Kansas Research and Graduate Studies is a site with which all graduate students should become familiar. The Graduate Studies section of the site links to a Funding for Graduate Students page that includes links to both KU and external research funding sources, scholarships, fellowships and awards, as well as travel funds for travel to academic conferences and other scholarly activity. Please take the time to explore these pages and note the deadlines for applications.

Office of Student Financial Aid
