Student and Alumni Awards 2007

Service, leadership and scholarship awards
Rashida Banerjee is the first KU student to receive the J. David Sexton Doctoral Student Award, which is presented by the Council for Exceptional Children Division for Early Childhood. She was honored at the annual DEC conference held Oct. 25-28 in Niagara Falls, Ontario in Canada. Banerjee was nominated for the award by her program advisor, Eva Horn. Full article>>
Nina Zuna, August 2007 doctoral graduate, received the 2007 American Association on Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities Student Award. Zuna’s advisors were Ann and Rud Turnbull. Zuna is also featured in the University’s “Women of Distinction” calendar. Full article>>
Kelley Young, KU Master’s student, recently won the Horizon Award, which is awarded by Lawrence Public Schools and honors the outstanding new teacher of the year. Young works as a special education teacher at Hillcrest Elementary School as well as doing her coursework with her advisor, Wayne Sailor. Young received the award on Sept. 19 and was picked out of all the second-year teachers in the district.
Dissertation awards
Amy Scheuermann, who also graduated from the doctoral program in 2006 and is now an assistant professor at Bowling Green State University, won the 2007 Council for Learning Disabilities Outstanding Researcher Award for her dissertation, The Effects of the Explicit Inquiry Routine on the Performance of Students with Learning Disabilities on One-Variable Equations. Scheuermann is the second consecutive KU graduate to receive the award. Her advisors were Don Deshler and Jean Schumaker.
Presentation awards
The Council for Exceptional Children Division on Developmental Disabilities honored Sheila Smith, doctoral student in autism spectrum disorders, with the 2007 Herbert J. Prehm Student Presentation Award. Smith’s advisor is Brenda Myles. Full article>>
Internships
Doctoral student Maya Israel was selected for the 2007-2008 Doctoral Student Internship, presented by the Higher Education Consortium for Special Education (HECSE). Her advisor is Chriss Walther-Thomas. Full article>>
Scholarships
Joo Young Hong, a Master’s student in the deaf education program, received the 2007 P.E.O. International Peace Scholarship, which helps international women pursue graduate studies in the United States. Hong's advisor is Sally Roberts. Full article>>
