New Unified Early Childhood Program Equips for Kansas Teacher Licensure
The UEC program has been designed to follow the same model as the other program options in the School of Education’s five year teacher education programs with entry during the Fall of junior year and completion of a 5th year post-baccalaureate student teaching and internship year (i.e., elementary and secondary). The KU-UEC program will meet the current demand for an early childhood teacher licensure program at the University of Kansas previously served by three separate programs, in Early Childhood, Early Childhood Special Education, and Elementary Education with an Early Childhood Minor. The ECU license will become the only EC license in the state of Kansas by 2008. The new KSDE Early Childhood Unified (birth through grade 3) license is the first of a new sequence of teaching licenses (based on age groups) and the first and only license blending special education and general education. KU is in a unique position to draw from faculty with expertise across the previously separate areas included in this license (Early Childhood Education, Early Childhood Special Education, and Elementary Education - Kindergarten through 3rd grade). The SOE has received national ranking for its excellence in teacher education programs and educational research and can provide leadership and support for the implementation of this new program throughout Kansas and the nation. Faculty supporting the KU-UEC program: Eva Horn, Barb Thompson, Diane Nielsen, Barbara Bradley, and Nancy Peterson. |
