Becky Saathoff and KU Provost Richard lariviereBecky Saathoff, a research aide with the KU Department of Special Education, swam her way to silver medals in two events at the 2006 U.S. National Special Olympics in Ames, Iowa in July. Becky’s medals came in two individual events, the 50 meter backstroke and the 50 meter freestyle. She also participated in the 200 meter medley relay team. Becky has been involved with Special Olympics for six years.

Sherrie Saathoff, Admissions Coordinator for the Department of Special Education and Becky’s mom, said “Special Olympics Nationals was planned as a dream to honor the athletes – an invitation to dignity and respect – so well deserved – so conquered!  It was a week of so many accomplishments, a week that the athletes, families, coaches, and volunteers will never forget.  We all feel so honored to have been part of this wonderful event!”

Becky was honored at a reception at the School of Education during which University of Kansas Provost Richard Lariviere presented her with a certificate signed by him and Chancellor Robert Hemenway commemorating her winning performances. Nearly 100 friends and family joined the celebration that included a thrilling video of her Special Olympic trip produced by Ken Komiya, a student employee of the School of Education’s Learning Resource Center.
