The teacher education program is an extended five-year program in the School of Education. Students apply to the program in their sophomore year, enter the program as juniors, graduate with a Bachelor of Science in Education (B.S.E.) degree, then as graduate students, complete an academic year of student teaching, internship, and graduate study.
Students have a strong general education background, extensive study in the content area they want to teach, and a thorough grounding in foundations of teaching and student learning. Field-based experiences in schools are an important component of the program. Students observe and participate in a variety of settings throughout their programs and become familiar with many different educational environments.
Programs in elementary, English and history & government education are available only at the undergraduate level, regardless of previous degrees. Graduate Licensure Programs (GLP) are also available in mathematics, science and foreign language, and physical education.
Students are admitted to the program once a year; applications are available in mid-November.
For more information, please contact a School of Education advisor, or visit the School of Education Welcome Center.
Undergraduate students who wish to earn a degree in mathematics or science, as well as a secondary (grades 6-12) teaching license, may enroll in the four-year UKanTeach Program. For more information about this option, go to the UKanTeach website or contact the UKanTeach advisor (mdbarker@ku.edu).
