Prospective Students

Prospective SudentsThank you for your interest in The University of Kansas School of Education. Our four academic departments educate future teachers, administrators, counselors, psychologists and health and sport professionals. If you are considering enrolling in the KU School of Education but have not yet begun your studies with us, please find the category below that best matches your interests and career goals, or visit our Prospective Careers page.

Undergraduate Students

New undergraduate students have never attended college (even if you took some college courses while in high school, KU considers you to be a new undergraduate). As soon-to-be freshmen, prospective undergraduate students have many questions about this exciting chapter in life. The Office of Admissions and Scholarships is the best source of information on the admissions process, student housing, student tours of campus, student life, freshman scholarships and more. Starting college is a time in which students take on greater responsibility, meet diverse people and adjust to the demands of college. Attending one of our New Student Orientation sessions, which are held throughout the summer, help students and parents prepare for the transition to college.

Undergraduate students are eligible to apply for the School of Education's scholarships program concurrently with their application to their respective degree program. During the first two years, all undergraduate students are enrolled in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, where they complete most of their School of Education admission requirements. Typically, undergraduates apply for admission in the middle of their sophomore year of study and enter the School of Education at the beginning of their junior year.

International Undergraduate Applicants

International Undergraduate Applicants should seek admissions and application information at the International Undergraduate Admissions Office.

Transfer students

student orientationTransfer students are undergraduates who have taken classes at another university or community college and wish to transfer to KU to complete a degree. Before transferring to KU, prospective students should contact the School of Education advising center to (1) insure that they are eligible for admission to the School of Education and (2) are able to complete an undergraduate program in a timely manner.

Transfer students must also contact the Office of Admissions and Scholarships for information on admission to KU, student housing, student tours of campus, student life, scholarships and transfer equivalency. After a student has been admitted to KU, the university will perform a transcript analysis to determine which classes will transfer to KU and count toward a degree program.

PLEASE NOTE: Admission to KU, even as a pre-Education student, does not guarantee admission to the School of Education. All admission requirements for School of Education programs, including minimum grade point averages, must be completed. Contact a School of Education advisor for information before transferring.

Typically, transfer students apply for admission in the middle of their sophomore year of study (even if they are still enrolled at another university or community college and have not yet transferred to KU) and enter the School of Education at the beginning of their junior year.

Graduate Students

Graduate licensure students have completed a degree in another field and wish to return to college to become teachers. Currently, we offer this program for people interested in teaching middle and/or secondary, math, science, foreign language or physical education. Typically, students interested in this program already have degrees in the area they wish to teach.

New graduate students have completed either a bachelor’s degree or a bachelor’s degree and a master’s degree at KU or at another university. The best source for information on a particular graduate program is the faculty and staff in the academic department that offers the degree.

Questions about admissions to School of Education graduate programs should be directed to the graduate admissions coordinator of the appropriate academic department. Please refer to the department's web site for more information regarding programs, admissions requirements, advising, application procedures, course information, faculty and staff contact information and more.
