Beginning January 2007, all Form 1 Applications for an Initial License (the first teaching license) or an Added Endorsement will be processed online through the KSDE web site. This new online process should improve services at KSDE, especially in the busy summer months. All applicants will be updated throughout the process via email messages.
It is very important to have a working email address that you will monitor throughout the licensure process. If you are no longer currently enrolled at KU, you may need another account (like gmail or yahoo).
All applicants must register with KSDE and each application will be password protected. It should only take you about 5 minutes to register and another 10 minutes to file the application online. After KU submits their portion of your application, KSDE will email you with instructions on how to pay their fee online ($39, includes $3 extra fee for online) or by mail ($36).
Enter data accurately! I recommend that you edit carefully and print yourself a copy before hitting the submit button. FYI, all degrees from KU are issued either in late May (date varies) or August 1 or December 31. We cannot process your application until all grades for all licensure courses are officially posted and/or the necessary degrees are conferred. For example, if you are a Music Education student graduating in Fall, we cannot process your application until around January 10.
We cannot process your Form 1 application until we have your passing test scores on file. Beginning November 2008, we have a NEW system for receiving test scores electronically from ETS. However, since no system is perfect, be sure to keep the PDF or hardcopy of your licensure exam scores in a safe place. If we don’t have the electronic score available when you apply for licensure, Alisa will contact you with further instructions.
Applicants for a new, initial license must be fingerprinted, which is a separate process. The special KSDE fingerprint packages are available in 208 JRP or from Alisa. Applicants should be fingerprinted about 2-4 months before applying for licensure. If you have a current teaching or emergency substitute license, you will not need to be fingerprinted again.
When you’re ready to apply, start by reading all of the instructions from KSDE
. This will take 15 minutes. The process is fairly “intuitive” but some of you may want to print the instructions before starting. Remember, you can “save/hold” the application at any time during your data entry. Now, go to https://online.ksde.org/authenticationpublic and register.
Next, fill out the Form 1 and submit it.
The Form 1 is the first online application from KSDE. Other applications, such as the Provisional (Form 4) and the Renewal (Form 3) will continue to be filed on a hardcopy form. If you are completing more than one form at a time, email Alisa for instructions.
