Accessing Files on a PC While off Campus
This article outlines a simple way to access one's home (U: drive) and group (G: drive) storage from outside the reach of the SOE Novell network.
- Double-click My Computer, and then click My Network Places in the left-hand sidebar.
- Click Add a network place in the left-hand sidebar. The Add Network Place wizard will appear. Click Next to begin.
- Select Choose another network location, and click Next.
- You will be asked for the network address for your network place. Type: https://soedata1.soe.ku.edu/oneNet/Netstorage, and then click Next.
- You may be presented with a security alert saying "The security certificate ..." Click Yes to continue.
- You will be asked to enter your SOE network ID and password. Do so and click OK.
- The wizard will now ask you to enter a name for this network place. Enter whatever you wish. Choose something that helps you remember what you're accessing. Click Next when you're done.
- Click Finish. The contents of your G: and U: drives should now be visible. You may get another security alert; click Yes to accept it and continue.
You can now access these spaces through your My Network Places folder. Files may be transferred to or from them as with any networked or attached drive.
Note:
Due to bandwidth issues it is advised that, when working on a document, you copy it to your local machine > make your changes > then copy the file back to your G: or U: drive. This is only necessary when accessing files remotely.
