Faculty service is a key element of the university’s mission. As stated in the university’s Faculty Handbook, “…the University seeks to recognize the service that faculty may contribute to the University, the community, the state, or the nation. Service is of several kinds. Intramural service is expected of every faculty member. It is part of being a good citizen and a participating member of the academic community. Related extramural activities in professional organizations and in public service are encouraged and recognized. They add to the professional competence of the individual, provide contacts with a larger circle of peers, and, in turn, make possible greater visibility for the University.” (p. 46)
The faculty provides high quality professional service in many forms and to many constituencies. Service to PDS sites and other P-12 schools is a particular emphasis within the unit; however, as faculty vitae show, we provide professional service to other institutions, state government, and agencies that directly or indirectly provide educational services to children and adults. In addition to the direct services provided that draw on the expertise of the faculty, we serve as editors for eight scholarly journals, and nearly all of our faculty serve on major journal editorial boards or as manuscript reviewers. In addition, faculty and staff serve a variety of professional associations as officers, board members and chairs. While all such assignments are listed in the faculty vita, some of the more prominent ones include: American Association for Colleges of Teacher Education, American Association of Retarded Citizens, Council for Exceptional Children, Council for Learning Disabilities, Higher Education Consortium for Special Education, Kansas Learning First Alliance, International Autism Society, American Educational Research Association, National Community Education Association, Association for the Study of Higher Education, Association of Teacher Educators, International Society for Music Education, Music Educators National Conference, National Art Education Association, American Psychological Association, Society for Counseling Psychology, the History of Childhood Society, Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development, Kansas Association of School Administrators, and the Kansas Learning First Alliance. Four unit faculty serve on the NCATE Board of Examiners.
Our faculty is also active on the national and international levels, providing service to professional communities around the nation and globe. Collectively, over 200 important service assignments were undertaken by our faculty in the reporting period and cover the state and many points across the nation. Faculty involvement at the international level is documented at http://soe.ku.edu/ncate/exhibits/faculty-diversity and discussed in Standard 4.
The unit faculty is also well represented on important university committees as a part of the university governance structure. Some of the important service assignments undertaken by our faculty include: Center for Science Education; Senate Executive Committee; Black Faculty and Staff Council; Faculty Rights, Privileges and Responsibilities; Institutional Review Board for Research on Human Subjects; Center for Teaching Excellence; and the Graduate Council.
