Heidi Hallman (assistant professor, department of curriculum and teaching) received the Geiger Gould Teaching Award at the School at the 18th Annual School of Education Convocation on May 16, 2009 at the Lied Center on the KU Campus.
The Geiger Gould Teaching Award was established by the family of Meredith Geiger-Gould, a 1928 graduate of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. After her graduation, Mrs. Gould taught school at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas. Her five children created the award in 1998 to honor the undergraduate teaching faculty in the teacher education program at KU. Each spring, students receiving a bachelor’s degree in teacher education select the professor who best exhibits excellence in classroom teaching. Recipients of the honor receive a cash award and an engraved plaque.
Hallman joined the School of Education in 2007. Her area of focus is English education, particularly sociocultural theories of language and literacy.
In the nomination for this award, Hallman’s students wrote: “She models exactly the kind of teacher we should be with our own future students. Her perspective and teaching style has made my time in her courses the most valuable time I have spent in the School of Education…Most of all, Dr. Hallman has been a guide for all of us in English education as our advisor. She listens well, provides great advice, and keeps all of us up to date and aware of information regarding student teaching and our future careers.”
