Students honored at School of Education Convocation


Sixteen University of Kansas students were honored at the 18th annual School of Education convocation on May 16th.
 
Rick Ginsberg, dean of education, presented the awards at the convocation, which was part of KU commencement activities.
 
The award for Outstanding Doctoral Dissertation was presented to Rashida Banerjee for her dissertation titled “Morning or afternoon: Does it make a difference in early childhood programs?” Bannerjee received her doctorate from the Department of Special Education in August 2008. Her advisor was Eva Horn.
 
The Outstanding Master's Thesis was awarded to Lonna Summers for her thesis “Empowerment and self-efficacy in the lives of four emerging bilingual assistants in an additive bilingual program.” Summers completed her master’s degree from the Department of Curriculum & Teaching in August 2008. Lizette Peter was her advisor.
 
The Outstanding Master's Project was awarded to Michael Brown for his project “Breaking the ties that bind: A narrative approach to understanding and treating sexual addiction.”. Brown received his master’s degree from the Department Psychology and Research in Education in May 2009. Tom Krieshok was his advisor.
 
Thirteen graduating seniors received Senior Leadership Awards. The awards recognize exemplary leadership through involvement in the school, university and/or community activities. Each received an engraved pewter Jayhawk statue.
 
The honored students and their programs of study were: Karen Christensen Buhler, Unified Early Childhood Education; Valerie Ann Chapple, Secondary Science Education in Physics; Alexis Brianne Childs, Unified Early Childhood Education; Monica Barbara Dutcher, Elementary Education; Benjamin Montgomery Engle, Sport Science Major in Sport Management; Adriane Marie Ferbezar, Elementary Education; Hannah Elizabeth McMacken, Elementary Education; Meghan Kathleen Miller, Community Health Major; Torre Norton, Elementary Education; Ashlea Orrell, Unified Early Childhood Education; Dylan Porter, Elementary Education; Ashley Marie Roedel, Community Health Major; and Nicole Schmidt, Secondary Science Education in Biology.
