Celebration of Teaching Honors

The Center for Teaching Excellence recognized Don Deshler, among other SOE faculty, at the 12th annual Celebration of Teaching on May 5th in the Kansas Union Ballroom. One graduate student commented: "Dr. Deshler exemplifies the ideal extraordinary teacher." —Beth Clavenna-Deane & Daniel Pollitt

Special education chair Chriss Walther-Thomas sent the following message to Deshler. It ably sums up not only his accomplishments but that of his fellow award winners.

"It was my pleasure to attend the Center for Teaching Excellence award ceremony yesterday afternoon with you…You, Bob, Dongbin, Billy, and Lizette all represented the School’s commitment to quality teaching well… As the Provost noted, it was an excellent opportunity for us to refl ect on the central mission of quality graduate education.

"As Beth Clavenna-Deane and Dan Pollitt described why the Department’s doctoral students nominated you for this honor, their words rang true. Regularly, our doctoral student tell me how much they value your genuine commitment to teaching and to individualized student development. They report that they learn a lot more than just effective proposal development from your courses. I hear about how you gently infl uence their thinking about life’s priorities, balancing personal and professional commitments, personal integrity, quality work, and fi nding one’s passion.

"Thank you for the wonderful work you do."
