For students with a strong academic background and a completed Bachelor's degree, the Department of Health, Sport, and Exercise Sciences (HSES) offers a teacher licensure program for Physical Education PK-12 with coursework at the graduate level. Upon completion on this program, students will be recommended by the University for a teaching license and will have completed a portion of the coursework required for a Master of Science in Education degree through the HSES Department.
Students pursuing teacher licensure through this program must be admitted to the graduate school. Students are eligible if they hold an undergraduate degree from an accredited institution and a grade point average of 3.0 or higher on a 4.0 scale. Students with a GPA of 2.75 - 3.0 may petition to be admitted on probation. The GRE is required to be admitted to this program. A score of 1000 (combined verbal & quantitative) is expected.
Prior to being admitted to the teacher licensure program, all students are required to complete the reading, writing, and mathematics parts of the Pre-Professional Skills Test (PPST), which is required of all students in teacher education programs at all Regents Schools in Kansas. The paper/pencil version of the PPST normally is administered six times a year; registration for the test is due approximately 1 month before the test date. The computerized version is taken by appointment; contact Testing Services at (785) 864-2768. PPST applications and information are available from Testing Services, 2150 Watkins Health Center. The Learning Resources Center, 110 Joseph R. Pearson Hall, has study guides on reserve that provide additional PPST information and sample questions.
Educational Testing Services discards PPST scores periodically. Students should be sure to keep in a safe place the original test report that ETS will mail them. For more information on testing and the licensure process, go to the Licensure portion of our School of Education web site.
Accepted applicants will be admitted as graduate students in the HSES Department. Upon completion of the licensure program, relevant graduate courses taken may be applied to a graduate degree program. For a graduate school application form and more information regarding admission, use online application link, or contact Dr. Keith Tennant, 146 C Robinson Center, The University of Kansas, Lawrence, Kansas 66045 (785-864-4656).
To be recommended for licensure, students must complete coursework in three areas: general education, teaching field majors/minors, and professional education. In most instances, applicants for this program will already have met most requirements in general education and to some extent the teaching field major as part of their undergraduate programs.
