Field Placement Requests

Early Field Experiences

Our early field experiences provide pre-service teachers an opportunity to observe and/or interact with students in the surrounding public school districts. These placements must be secured through the field placement office. Click here for guidelines that will help you understand what to expect when you enter the classroom as an observer or an aide.

How to Submit an Early Field Experience Request

  1. Attend class for specific instructions from your instructor. He or she will give you the information you need regarding the subject, level, and districts you may request.
  2. Choose the districts where you would most like to complete your field experience. Be prepared to go to your second or even third choice.
  3. Complete the online placement request. Be sure to submit your request by the deadline and include your email address.
  4. Wait patiently. You can periodically check the status of your placement (see below).
  5. When you are notified of your placement either by Melissa Robinson, the Director of the Field Experience Placement Center, or by checking the online status check, please contact the teacher ASAP. You can usually find a teacher’s email address on the school web site if it is not provided to you. There have been many instances where students have waited too long to contact their cooperating teacher, and the teacher later declines to allow the student in his or her classroom. If this happens, the field placement office is not required to find you a new placement.

Student Teaching/Internship

Each education program requires the pre-service teacher to complete a student teaching and/or internship experience. These must be secured through the field placement office. For more information on these experiences, please visit the student teaching and internship experiences page and review the Student Teaching/Internship Handbook (pdf)

How to Submit a Student Teaching or Internship Request

  1. Attend the Intent to Student Teach meeting held every spring semester for students planning to student teach or intern during the following academic year. You will receive important information and paperwork.
  2. Complete all of the required paperwork (including the appropriate signatures) and return it to Melissa Robinson, the Director of the Field Experience Placement Center, by the due date.
  3. After turning this in, complete your online request (see below). Be sure to click on the appropriate form for your program and what kind of placement you choose to request. If you have questions, contact the placement office. These online forms must be filled out completely. Failure to do so may result in a district denying your request.
  4. Please be patient! We have most of the fall placements secured by May 1st and most of the spring placement secured by December 1st, but there are always a few that take more time.
  5. You can check the status of your student teaching or internship placement online (see below) .
  6. You probably will not receive an email confirmation of your placement. It is your responsibility to check the online status check periodically. When you know your placement, feel free to contact your clinical supervisor and introduce yourself. Find out if there is anything you can do to start preparing. Also be sure to read the entire Student Teaching/Internship Handbook before your first day.

Professional Year, MEMT, GLP and HPE students submit your online request here.

Graduate Practicum

Most graduate practicum experiences require the student to complete a health/TB form, or provide proof that they have had one completed recently. Many districts also require the student to obtain personal liability coverage. Please consult your faculty advisor or instructor about what forms and/or paperwork is required. He or she should also know if there is a specific handbook available for your experience.

How to Submit a Graduate Practicum Request

  1. Meet with the faculty instructor and/or supervisor to get details about your practicum placement.
  2. Fill out the online Graduate Practicum Request form below.
  3. Email Melissa Robinson at mherm@ku.edu to notify her that you have completed this form.
  4. Get any necessary TB/health forms and/or liability coverage paperwork completed. If you need these forms, contact the field placement office at mherm@ku.edu.
  5. You will not receive an email confirming your placement. It is your responsibility to check the online status check periodically. Please contact your clinical supervisor and introduce yourself when you know your placement.

Students seeking a Practicum field experience submit your online request here. Some examples are: Early Childhood or Deaf Education.
