Field Experience

Early Field Experience

Our early field experiences provide pre-service teachers an opportunity to observe or interact with students in the surrounding public school districts. These placements are always affiliated with an undergraduate course and are secured through the School of Education's Field Placement Office ( Do not attempt to secure a placement yourself. School and district administrators have strict policies against students securing their own placements.

  • Your instructor will outline the field experience requirements for the course on the first day of class. He or she might ask you to submit your grade, subject and district preferences to them. This information is passed on to the Field Placement Office (if applicable).
  • When you are placed, you will receive an email from the Field Placement Office with your school, teacher name and contact information. Immediately email the teacher to introduce yourself and arrange your visits. There have been many instances where students have waited too long to make contact and the teacher has declined the placement. If this happens, the Field Placement Office is not required to find you a new placement.
  • We will try to place you in the Lawrence school district unless instructed otherwise. However, many of you will have to travel. If you don't have a car, you may need to borrow one or use the bus service.
  • You must do everything possible to work around the teacher's schedule when arranging your visits. If there is no way you can make it work, contact the Placement Office ( and we will do what we can to find you an alternate assignment.

Guidelines for your early field experience visit(s):

  1. Arrive at your school at least 10 minutes early to find parking and check in at the office. Check in every time you visit the school unless instructed otherwise. Many schools require visitors and guests to wear visitor badges.
  2. Only cancel your visit in the event of an emergency and do what you can to give the school and teacher ample notice of your absence.
  3. To ensure a positive learning environment for the students in the classroom, it is inappropriate to talk while the teacher is presenting a lesson. Likewise, your phone should be turned off and out of sight.
  4. Understand that you are a guest in the school. Your behavior should reflect this basic understanding. Therefore, dress appropriately. Your appearance should reflect a professional attitude. Do not wear hats, shorts, sunglasses, or clothing with inappropriate slogans. Do not chew gum. Dress and act as if you were the teacher.
  5. Be prepared to briefly describe the course for which you are observing and the purpose and requirements of your visits.
  6. Courtesy demands that you thank the teacher you have observed as you leave the classroom. Keep in mind that the teacher is doing KU a great favor by opening up his/her classroom to students. At the conclusion of this semester, a thank you note to the teacher is a great gesture.
