Curriculum and Teaching
The University of Kansas, School of Education, Department of Curriculum and Teaching is home to the Gifted and Talented Education area of emphasis. KU has offered coursework in education of the gifted since the 1950's, and has developed and continues to refine its endorsement and degree programs, first offered in the 1970's. Its doctoral program is one of the nation's oldest.
The program follows guidelines set forth by the Kansas State Department of Education, and although there is no accrediting agency specifically for gifted education programs, the National Association for Gifted Children and the Association for the Gifted have collaborated on a set of standards which KU's program follows as closely as possible.
The Department of Curriculum and Teaching has one of its major focuses the preparation of teachers of gifted, talented, and creative students. Preparation can be either in the form of a graduate level endorsement (requires a combination of 30 graduate hours of coursework and supervised practica), a master's degree, Ed.D. or a Ph.D. in Curriculum and Instruction with an emphasis on gifted education.
The core requirement for doctoral students in the School of Education includes courses in statistics or research, human learning or development, history, philosophy, or social foundations of education and general curriculum or general instructional strategies.

The Department of Curriculum and Teaching offers graduate teaching assistantships
that enable students to be employed while completing an advanced degree.
Graduate assistantships are available for student teacher supervision, undergraduate teaching, and work on research projects.
This also could include assisting faculty with course instruction
or research and/or supervising student teachers at the elementary, middle, or secondary
levels. Applicants pursuing a doctorate in the Department of Curriculum and Teaching
are preferred. Classroom teaching experience is highly preferred.
