Curriculum Studies

The Graduate program in Curriculum Studies (CS) in the Department of Curriculum and Teaching prepares students for leadership roles in local, state, and national settings as scholars, curriculum directors, and administrative leaders. Students examine curricular theory and history at the various national levels of education from the 18th to the 21st century. Contemporary schools of thought and research are of particular interest as they relate to the selection, organization, and evaluation of programs of curriculum.

While the curriculum studies program enrolls mainly K-12 teachers and Administrators, professional educators from other fields also participate, e.g., nursing, community college faculty, military college faculty and educators within government and private industry.

The core courses in the program consists of:

C&T 708 or PRE 715: Understanding Research in Education

Curriculum Studies/University RelationsC&T 709: Foundations of Curriculum & Instruction

C&T 800: Foundations of Curriculum Development

C&T 802: Curriculum Planning for Educational Settings

C&T 901: Curriculum Supervision

C&T 899: Master's Thesis or

C&T 999: Doctoral Dissertation

In addition, students typically take coursework in Foundations of Education (history, philosophy, and sociology, and Policy Studies (EPL programs at the doctoral level) and related courses in curriculum and instruction (e.g., courses in instruction and related subject area methodologies).

  • M.A. in C&I emphasis in Curriculum Studies (non-thesis option)
  • M.S. in C&I emphasis in Curriculum Studies (thesis option)
  • M.S. in C&I emphasis in Curriculum Studies (non-thesis option)
  • Ed.D.
  • Ph.D.

The Core Requirement for Doctoral Students in the School of Education

The core requirement for doctoral students in the School of Education includes courses in statistics or research, human learning or development, history, philosophy, or social foundations of education and general curriculum or general instructional strategies.



Faculty

The core faculty in the CS program are Professors Marc Mahlios and Philip McKnight, and Associate Professors Mary Lynn Hamilton and Reva Friedman-Nimz.

Graduate Teaching Assistant (GTA) Application

The Department of Curriculum and Teaching offers graduate teaching assistantships that enable students to be employed while completing an advanced degree. Graduate assistantships are available for student teacher supervision, undergraduate teaching, and work on research projects. This also could include assisting faculty with course instruction or research and/or supervising student teachers at the elementary, middle, or secondary levels. Applicants pursuing a doctorate in the Department of Curriculum and Teaching are preferred. Classroom teaching experience is highly preferred.
