To add the ESL endorsement, you must hold a current Kansas teaching
licensure.
Apply to the Department of Curriculum & Teacher for graduate admission
and enrollment.
Classes at the 700 level are graduate level (which may help with pay in
some districts and count
towards a master's degree in Curriculum & Instruction through the
C&T Dept.)
The program shall provide for:
(a) The study of general linguistics and applied linguistics so that the
prospective teacher can apply to language teaching an understanding of
the differences in the sound systems, forms, structures, and lexicon of
English and other languages:
Ling 700 Introduction to Linguistic Science (3) or any one of the
following:
Ling 106 Introductory Linguistics (3)
Engl 387 Introduction to the English Language (3)
Engl 787 Modern English Grammar (3)
(b) The study of language as an essential element of
culture and the principal ways in which the culture of the United States
differs from other cultures:
C&T 807 Multicultural Education (3) or any one of the following:
C&T 325 Education in a Multicultural Society (3)
C&T 823 Developing Intercultural Awareness (3)
Anth 320 Language in Culture & Society (3)
(c) The study of the process of language acquisition
and development:
C&T 822 Second Language Acquisition (3)
(d) Experience in language teaching which shall include
knowledge of present day objectives of the teaching of English as a second
language and an understanding of the methods and techniques for attaining
these objectives:
C&T 825 Practicum in ESL (3) or the applicant must verify teaching
experience in a K-12 ESL situation for a minimum of one academic year
(by letter, on school letterhead, from the supervising principal)
(e) Experiences in the use of specialized techniques and the ability to
evaluate the effectiveness of teaching materials, procedures, and curricula,
as well as the professional literature of teaching English as a second
language:

(f) The study of the principles of language assessment
and experience in applying the techniques and interpretation of the results
of second-language assessment:
C&T 821 Diagnosis & Remediation in Second Language Education

(g) A proficiency in spoken and written English at a level commensurate with the student's role as language model. A non-native speaker must satisfy standards of the KU Applied English Center to verify proficiency.
In your final semester of coursework, plan to
take the ESOL Subject Area Exam and contact the
Certification Officer at the KU School of Education to get an application
to add the endorsement.
