Preparing Educators as Leaders

Gene A. Budig Lecture Series

Dr. Gene A. Budig was appointed KU’s 14th Chancellor in 1981. During his 13-year tenure, more than 180 new faculty positions were established. He was an active fundraiser during the university's 1987-1992 capital campaign that raised more than $265 million from private donors. Budig Hall is also named in his honor.

Over the years, Dr. and Mrs. Budig have been very generous supporters of the KU School of Education and the Department of Special Education. The Budig Teaching Professorship in Education (awarded annually) was established in 1994 through a combination of gifts to the KU Endowment Association from the Budigs as well as previous endowment gifts made in his honor.

In 2002, the Budigs added the Budig Teaching Professorship in Special Education (awarded annually), designed to recognize outstanding faculty instruction in the Department of Special Education.

In 2007, they established the Budig Teaching Professorship of Writing. This award recognizes outstanding faculty in the KU School of Education and KU School of Journalism. During alternating years, each School recognizes one exemplary faculty member. All three of the Budig Professorship Awards recognize outstanding faculty instruction (teaching), and the recipients of the awards are asked to deliver a formal lecture.
