Element 3: Modeling Best Practices in Scholarship

Research and Best Practice is a theme of the Educators as Leaders conceptual framework. And, faculty scholarship is a key element of the university’s mission. As stated in the university’s Faculty Handbook, “As an educational institution, the University exists to create, preserve, and transmit knowledge. The creative process of scholarly productivity is an integral and indispensable part of this existence.” (p. 45) As articulated in various institutional documents, and throughout this Institutional Report, there is a clear expectation for faculty scholarly productivity, which is linked to successful tenure and promotion processes. The unit’s faculty has an extraordinary list of scholarly accomplishments, even for an AAU and Research Extensive institution. Scholarly productivity is often measured through the number and quality of scholarly products created by faculty, including research, grants and contracts, publications and presentations, and awards. In the calendar year 2005, the faculty were engaged in a variety of studies that resulted in publications (50 books, 148 book chapters, 284 articles, and 57 other publications); over $21 million in sponsored research and training projects; 766 presentations at major scholarly meetings; and 52 awards for scholarly recognition of meritorious achievement. In addition, 67 faculty serve as journal reviewers and 84 serve as professional association board members or officers. (Faculty evaluations occur during the spring semester for the just-completed calendar year. Complete data for 2006 are not yet available.) Faculty vitae showing scholarship are available at http://soe.ku.edu/alphabetical-vita-list. Faculty-authored books, exemplary candidate scholarship, and other non-web based research will be available in the Exhibit Room on campus.
